Steroid Side Effects: Recommended Monitoring and Intervention
Before starting steroids, it is important that your MS team or GP check for signs of an infection, which should include a test for a urinary tract infection. If you are unwell, for example if you have a cold, a bladder infection or a stomach bug, you will often find that your MS symptoms get worse. Once you have recovered from the cold or treated the infection, your symptoms should start to improve. Checking for an infection is also important because steroids can make infections worse.

You won’t be able to have steroid creams or gels if you have an infection that affects your skin. Coping with side effects of steroid tablets
They may not be able to control themselves and hurt the ones they love. Although it’s not illegal to possess anabolic steroids for personal use, it’s illegal to supply or sell them to other people. It is important to note that different people will have very different responses to steroids. The key to successful steroid management is to be aware of the potential side effects and work to prevent, or reduce, them where possible. Steroids can be taken in a number of ways for many different types of arthritis and related conditions, as shown in the table below. Steroid tablets are not usually recommended for children as they can cause growth problems. The new treatment
We list some of the less common side effects of steroids below. However, they can also happen with steroids taken at a lower dose for a long time. Any side effects of steroids are usually short-term and gradually improve once you stop taking them. Your steroid medication is adjusted to help lower this risk if you are at an increased risk of developing adrenal crisis.
Since the 1980s it has been replaced by synthetic steroids such as methylprednisolone. The NICE MS Guideline also recommends that steroids should be started as early as possible and within 14 days of the onset of relapse symptoms. But if you’re taking high doses for a long time, you may be at risk of some of the same side effects as steroid tablets. Research is ongoing into new treatments for all types of severe asthma.
This is known as adrenal crisis, or secondary adrenal insufficiency. It is more likely to happen with steroids taken by mouth (orally) than with other types of steroids.
