Steroid Side Effects: Recommended Monitoring and Intervention

Before starting steroids, it is important that your MS team or GP check for signs of an infection, which should include a test for a urinary tract infection. If you are unwell, for example if you have a cold, a bladder infection or a stomach bug, you will often find that your MS symptoms get worse. Once you have recovered from the cold or treated the infection, your symptoms should start to improve. Checking for an infection is also important because steroids can make infections worse.

You won’t be able to have steroid creams or gels if you have an infection that affects your skin. Coping with side effects of steroid tablets

It is important to note that different people will have very different responses to steroids. The key to successful steroid management is to be aware of the potential side effects and work to prevent, or reduce, them where possible. The new treatment

We list some of the less common side effects of steroids below. However, they can also happen with steroids taken at a lower dose for a long time.
